What Is a Good Ping for Gaming?

Ping decides how responsive a game feels — far more than the headline speed on your internet plan. Here is what counts as good, what each range feels like in play, and what you can realistically do about it.

The short answer

For most online games, a ping under 50 ms is very good and anything under 100 ms is generally fine. Competitive shooters reward lower numbers; slower-paced games tolerate far higher ones.

Treat these as practical general ranges rather than guarantees. How a game actually feels also depends on which server you connect to, how steady your latency is from moment to moment (jitter), whether any data is being lost along the way, and how forgiving the game itself is about timing.

What each ping range feels like

The same number can be excellent in one genre and frustrating in another. This is roughly how each band plays out:

Under 20 ms

Excellent
How it feels
Effectively instant. Movement, aiming and abilities register the moment you press, and you are unlikely to blame the connection for anything.
Suits
Competitive shooters, fighting games, rhythm games — anything decided by fractions of a second.
Watch out for
Usually only reachable on a nearby server over a wired connection. Little practical gain from chasing lower numbers than this.

20–50 ms

Very good
How it feels
Responsive. Most players notice nothing at all, including in ranked play.
Suits
Every online genre, competitive play included.
Watch out for
In very fast competitive exchanges, a player with lower latency may have a small timing advantage, although the effect depends on the game’s servers, tick rate and lag-compensation system.

50–100 ms

Generally playable
How it feels
Fine in most games. In fast exchanges you may sense a slight delay between input and result.
Suits
Casual shooters, racing, sports, MMORPGs, strategy, co-op and most console multiplayer.
Watch out for
In tactical shooters, delayed input and server updates may become more noticeable, especially during fast close-range exchanges.

100–150 ms

Noticeable delay
How it feels
Actions visibly lag behind your input. Hits may register late and other players can appear to jump position.
Suits
Turn-based games, strategy, MMORPG questing and most co-op play remain comfortable.
Watch out for
Frustrating in competitive shooters and fighting games. Often a sign you are on a distant server.

Above 150 ms

Poor for fast games
How it feels
A clear gap between pressing a button and seeing the result.
Suits
Turn-based and slow-paced games only.
Watch out for
Fast-paced games may be genuinely unplayable. Worth checking your server region, Wi-Fi and anything else using the connection.

What ping actually measures

Ping is the round-trip time for a small message to travel from your device to a server and back, measured in milliseconds. It describes responsiveness, not capacity — how quickly the network reacts, rather than how much it can carry.

Ping versus latency

In everyday use the two are interchangeable. Strictly, latency is the general idea of network delay, while ping is the specific round-trip measurement most tools and games report. When a game shows “ping 42”, it means a round trip to that game server took about 42 ms.

Ping versus download speed

Download speed is how much data arrives per second; ping is how long each round trip takes. A motorway analogy holds up well here: speed is the number of lanes, latency is how long the journey takes. Widening the road does not shorten the distance. Multiplayer games send small, frequent position and input updates rather than large files, which is why they lean almost entirely on latency.

Ping versus jitter

Jitter is how much your ping varies between one moment and the next. A steady 60 ms usually plays better than a ping bouncing between 20 ms and 90 ms, because games predict where players will be and constant variation keeps breaking those predictions — which is what produces rubber-banding and characters that teleport. Why a fast connection can still have high ping

Because bandwidth and distance are unrelated problems. A gigabit connection still has to send your data to wherever the game server physically sits, and no plan removes the travel time. Add a weak Wi-Fi signal, a congested evening or a large download running in the background, and a very fast line can produce a distinctly sluggish game.

Good ping by game type

Competitive shooters

The most demanding category. Under 20 ms is ideal and under 50 ms is comfortable for ranked play. Higher latency can delay when your actions reach the server and may put you at a disadvantage in fast exchanges, although the effect depends on the game’s networking and lag-compensation systems. Stability counts as much as the raw figure.

Casual online games

Party games, shooters played for fun, sandbox and survival titles are all comfortable up to around 100 ms. Below that, the connection is unlikely to be what is limiting you.

Sports and racing games

These sit in the middle. Under 50 ms keeps wheel-to-wheel racing and close-quarters play feeling fair. Higher latency tends to show up as contact that resolves oddly, since both machines have to agree on what happened.

MMORPGs and strategy games

The most forgiving genres. Ability queues, cast times and turn structures absorb delay well, and 100 ms or more is usually fine outside high-end raiding, where consistency starts to matter again.

Cloud gaming

A special case with the tightest requirements, because nothing renders locally: your input travels to a remote machine and a video stream comes back. Every millisecond appears directly as delay between your controller and the picture. Aim for the lowest ping you can, keep jitter low, and note that cloud gaming also needs sustained bandwidth for the video — the one situation where speed and latency both matter a great deal.

Why your ping is high

High ping commonly comes from several possible causes:

Server distance
The farther the game server is from you, the longer data takes to travel there and back. Real network routes are not direct, so a server in another country or continent can add substantial latency even on a fast connection.
Wi-Fi interference
Walls, floors, neighbouring networks and household appliances all degrade a wireless signal. Wi-Fi rarely adds much latency when the signal is strong, but a weak or contested one adds both delay and instability.
Network congestion
At busy times of day, contention on your line or further upstream lengthens the queue your packets wait in. This is why the same game can feel sharp in the morning and sluggish at night.
Other devices on your connection
Another household member streaming in 4K, a console downloading an update or a cloud backup running can saturate the link and delay your game traffic behind it.
VPN use
A VPN routes your traffic through an extra server before it reaches the game, which normally adds latency rather than removing it. See the FAQ below for the narrow exception.
Router performance
An older or overloaded router can add delay of its own, especially when many devices are connected or it has been running for a long time without a restart.
ISP routing
Your traffic does not necessarily take the shortest geographic path. Routing decisions between networks can send it a long way round, which is largely outside your control.
Background downloads and updates
Game launchers, operating-system updates and cloud sync tools often download silently. They are one of the most common causes of ping that spikes for no obvious reason.

How to lower ping for gaming

None of these is guaranteed to help, because the cause differs from one connection to the next. Start with the simplest checks and re-test after each change so you can identify what actually helps.

  1. Connect over Ethernet

    Usually the most reliable single change. A cable removes wireless interference entirely and makes latency steadier, which often matters more than the raw number.

  2. Move closer to the router

    If a cable is not possible, reducing distance and the number of walls in the way strengthens the signal, which tends to cut both delay and variation.

  3. Use the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band

    These bands are typically less crowded than 2.4 GHz and carry less interference, at the cost of shorter range. Worth trying when you are reasonably close to the router.

  4. Stop background downloads

    Pause game-launcher updates, cloud backups and large downloads on every device before you play, not only the one you are playing on.

  5. Choose the nearest game server

    Where a game lets you pick a region or data centre, this is often the largest improvement available — and the one most people overlook.

  6. Restart your router and device

    A simple step that clears accumulated state and occasionally resolves latency that has crept up over days or weeks.

  7. Turn off an unnecessary VPN

    If you do not need it while gaming, disabling it removes an extra hop from the path.

  8. Update your router firmware

    Manufacturers fix performance and stability problems over time. Check your router's admin page or app for available updates.

  9. Test at different times of day

    Comparing a quiet morning with a busy evening tells you whether you are dealing with congestion or a constant problem — and that changes which fix is worth pursuing.

  10. Contact your provider if latency is persistently abnormal

    If ping stays high across servers, times of day and a wired connection, the issue may be on the line or in routing. Records of your own tests will help the conversation.

Does faster internet reduce ping?

Not on its own. This is the most common misunderstanding about gaming performance, and it costs people money on upgrades that change nothing.

Where an upgrade helps: if your connection is regularly saturated — a busy household, several 4K streams, constant downloads — then your game traffic is queueing behind everything else, and extra headroom lets it through sooner. That shows up as lower and steadier ping.

Where it does not: if your line is not congested, moving from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps typically leaves ping much where it was. The delay you are left with comes from distance, routing and your local network, and none of those is measured in megabits.

A useful check before spending anything: run a test while the house is quiet and again while it is busy. If ping only climbs under load, bandwidth is worth considering. If it is high either way, the cause lies elsewhere.

How to test your gaming ping accurately

  • Test over Ethernet where possible. It gives you a baseline free of wireless variability, so you can tell how much Wi-Fi is contributing.
  • Stop other traffic first. Pause downloads and streams on every device, or you are measuring the household rather than the connection.
  • Run several tests. A single result can be an outlier. A few in a row show you the pattern.
  • Compare different times of day. A quiet-hours result versus a peak-time one tells you whether congestion is involved.
  • Compare with your in-game ping. If a speed test reports low latency but the game shows a much higher figure, the extra delay is likely in the route to that particular game server rather than in your connection.
  • Know what the number refers to.TestConn measures latency to its own test endpoint, not to each game server you play on. Is 20 ms ping good for gaming?

Yes. Anything under about 20 ms is excellent and suits every genre, including competitive play. At that level your connection is very unlikely to be what is holding you back.

Is 50 ms ping good?

Yes, for almost everyone. 50 ms is comfortable across shooters, racing, sports, MMORPGs and strategy games. Only the most latency-sensitive competitive play is likely to feel any difference.

Is 100 ms ping bad?

It depends entirely on what you play. For turn-based games, strategy or MMORPG questing, 100 ms is perfectly workable. In a fast competitive shooter it is a real handicap, and it usually points to a distant server.

Does Ethernet lower ping?

Often, and it almost always makes latency steadier by removing wireless interference. It cannot help with delay that comes from server distance or from your provider's routing, so the size of the improvement varies.

Does faster internet improve ping?

Not by itself. Extra bandwidth helps when congestion is the cause, because your traffic stops queueing behind other downloads. If your line is not congested, more Mbps typically leaves ping roughly where it was.

Why is my ping high even with fast internet?

Because speed and latency measure different things. A gigabit line still cannot beat the travel time to a server on another continent, and Wi-Fi problems, congestion or a busy household can add delay regardless of how fast the plan is.

Can a VPN lower gaming ping?

Usually it raises ping, since traffic takes an extra hop. Occasionally a VPN happens to route around a poor path between your provider and the game server and helps — but that is the exception, and it is worth measuring rather than assuming.

What matters more, ping or download speed?

For gameplay, ping. Games send small, frequent updates rather than large files, so responsiveness depends on latency and its stability. Download speed matters mainly for how quickly games and patches install.
